The Historic Gateway to the Yorkshire Dales
Known as the southern gateway to the Dales, Skipton is a town where history and modern charm live side-by-side. Originally growing wealthy as a major trading centre for sheep and wool, it has retained its medieval heart while becoming one of Yorkshire’s most vibrant destinations.
A Medieval Masterpiece
The town’s layout is dominated by the magnificent Skipton Castle. Built in the late eleventh century, it remains one of the most complete and best-preserved medieval castles in the country.
- The Castle Grounds: Explore the historic towers and courtyards, which offer excellent views over the town and the surrounding moors.
- Skipton Woods: A gentle, picturesque walk along the canal towpath takes you from the town centre directly under the castle cliffs and into these delightful ancient woodlands.
Market Traditions & Independent Finds
Skipton began life as a market town in 1204, and that tradition is still very much alive today.
- The Famous Market: The four-times-weekly high street market is a tourist destination in its own right, surrounded by nostalgic cobbled side streets.
- Hidden Alleys: Explore the radiating alleys and covered passages between the old “tofts and crofts.” Today, these are bustling pedestrian areas packed with fascinating boutiques, independent shops, and hidden courtyards.
- Food & Drink: The town boasts a vibrant nightlife, excellent cafés, and host’s major events like the Yorkshire Dales Food & Drink Festival every July.
Life on the Water
The Leeds-Liverpool Canal runs right through the heart of Skipton, offering a different perspective on the town.
- Canal Boat Trips: You can hire a boat for a day trip or simply enjoy a stroll along the towpath.
- Waterways Festival: If you visit during the May Bank Holiday, the canal basin comes to life with the colourful and lively Waterways Festival.
Rare Treasures & Local History
For culture seekers, the Craven Museum in the Town Hall is a must-see. It offers a deep dive into Dales life, particularly the lead mining industry. Most notably, the museum is home to a rare Shakespeare First Folio from 1623. There are only 230 copies left in the world, and Skipton houses one of only four on permanent display globally!
